VRChat 2018.4.4

Released: Dec 20 2018

Client

Features

  • It is again possible to place chairs on avatars! Use this to create things like car avatars, carry around people in your hands or on your shoulders-- anything you can think up! Please note: This feature is prone to weirdness and may act strange. For best results, try to mount the chair on your avatar such that the "head" location (as in, where a standard-sized occupant's head will be when sitting) is as close as possible to the Bone/GameObject the VRC_Station is a child of
    • The easiest way to add a station to your avatar is to create an empty GameObject as a child of whatever you want it to "stick" to, then add the VRC_Station script to that new empty GameObject. Don't use the VRCChair prefab, you'll get some SDK errors
  • The SDK's limit on polygon (triangle) count is now 70,000, and will now warn you if your avatar is unoptimized in the Build Control panel. Check out the SDK section below for details on the changes to the SDK
  • Favorite Worlds have become Playlists, and you can view other users' Playlists!
    • You have up to three Playlists that you can save worlds into
    • Each Playlist has a maximum of 32 worlds
    • You can name each Playlist as you see fit
    • You can set the Privacy level of a Playlist to Public, Friends-Only, or Private
    • You can view the Playlists of other users on their Social page by clicking on the Playlists button.
  • You can now see avatar performance statistics of someone's avatar performance while in VRChat. This system is not meant to be an end-all-be-all authority on performance, but it can help guide users improve their avatar's performance impact. It is purely informational and does not limit anything at this time. Check out our Avatar Performance Ranking System page for more details. You can access it in two ways:
    • When your Quick Menu is open, you'll see an icon on the left side of the nameplate that indicates the general "performance ranking" of the avatar that user is wearing
      • Performance ranks are (in descending order of performance): "Excellent", "Good", "Medium", "Poor", "Very Poor"
    • When you select someone with your Quick Menu open, you can click the "View Avatar Stats" button to view details on their avatar's performance
      • These numbers are highlighted depending on where they fall on the Ranking scale
      • You can also view the stats of your own avatars in the Avatar tab of the menu
      • The numbers used in this system are not final and we will be tweaking it based on feedback and further review
  • You can view your own avatar's performance ranking by clicking "View Avatar Stats" on your Avatar page
  • You can now Clone any Public Avatar that another user is wearing as long as they have "Allow Avatar Cloning" enabled in the Settings menu! See an avatar that someone's wearing? Want to try it on yourself? As long as it is a Public avatar and the user in question has "Allow Avatar Cloning" checked in their Settings menu (enabled by default), then you can just click them, click the button on the right in your Quick Menu, and you're good to go!
    • Important Note: If you have avatars that you don't want to be Cloneable, make sure they're set to Private in the "Manage Uploaded Content" section of the SDK
  • You can also view the Social page of the Author of an Avatar any user is wearing! Find this button right below "Clone Public Avatar" on the right side of the Social Quick Menu once you click on someone
  • We slipped in some festive Holiday emoji. Please use mistletoe responsibly.

Changes

  • We have implemented heavy optimizations to the IK system! You now only calculate the IK of your own local avatar, and you transmit the results of those calculations to others. This should greatly reduce the cost of IK, which was previously one of the most intensive parts of the app
  • We have added a World Script Whitelist to improve security in worlds and prevent users from accessing scripts they should not have in worlds. See the full list of whitelisted world scripts here

Fixes

  • Safety and Security fixes
  • Fixed an issue causing VRChat to recognize game controllers as trackers
  • Fixed an issue where certain animators would cause worlds to crash
  • Fixed an issue where moving the mouse slowly horizontally would cause the movement to "catch"
  • The user point of view when sitting on a moving station is MUCH smoother (affects avatar and world stations)
  • Users without AVX instructions on their CPU should be able to launch VRChat once again. Thanks to Oculus for providing a patch!

Known Issues

  • Playlists currently have several issues with viewing/editing/sharing them. We're working on fixing this ASAP.
  • Announcement in pop-up during load informing users about Cloning is missing a URL. We're working on fixing this ASAP.
  • Moving stations, particularly on avatars, may result in some strange behavior. For best results, try to mount the chair on your avatar such that the "head" location (as in, where a standard-sized occupant's head will be when sitting) is as close as possible to the Bone/GameObject the VRC_Station is a child of
  • Doing any emote such as backflip, sitting in a station, and then getting back out will freeze you for about two minutes. Workaround: Don't do this
  • If you sit on a station that is on the avatar of someone sitting on you, you get flung into space. This is your punishment for breaking physics. Workaround: Don't do this-- or do, and accept the wrath of Newton
  • You can only have one copy of a world in any playlist (as in, you can't have the same world in multiple playlists)

SDK

Features

  • The SDK will now warn you when you are exceeding counts of various component types on avatars. This includes material counts, Dynamic Bone Affected Transforms, Dynamic Bone colliders, Skinned Meshes, and etc. We also provide links to our Avatar Optimizing Tips documentation to help users optimize their avatars. These warnings are non-blocking for now-- in the future, this will change
  • The SDK will tell you what Performance Rank your avatar is so you can see before you upload.

Changes

  • The SDK now permits avatars to have up to 70,000 polygons/triangles. Going above 70,000 polygons/triangles will prevent you from uploading your avatar

Fixes

  • The SDK has been informed that we've upgraded to 2017.4.15f1 and will no longer whine that it wants to go back to 5.6

VRChat 2018.4.3p1

Released: December 12, 2018

Client

Changes

  • Slight change to client reconnection behavior to mitigate issues when having problems with real-time networking services

VRChat 2018.4.3

Released: December 11, 2018

Client

Unity 2017 Upgrade

  • VRChat has upgraded to Unity 2017.4.15f1. Please read our Blog Post on the subject to learn more.
  • Check out our documentation on Migrating from 5.6 to 2017.4 for a full guide on installing 2017.4.15f1 and migrating your projects.
  • You must re-upload your worlds if:
    • You have baked lighting in the world and left the lights enabled, otherwise the lights will revert to "Mixed" lighting, hurting performance
    • You have a mirror in the world, otherwise the mirror will behave strangely
    • You use Realtime GI (Global Illumination) in your world, otherwise it will not work
    • You have animations in the world that affect GameObject rotation, otherwise the rotations will behave incorrectly
    • You have used Crunch Compression on textures in your world, otherwise the textures will not decompress/display properly
  • You must re-upload your avatars if:
    • You have animations on your avatar that affect GameObject rotation, otherwise the rotations will behave incorrectly
    • You have used Crunch Compression on textures on your avatar, otherwise the textures will not decompress/display properly

Features

  • Support for Unity Store assets that require Unity 2017.4 (as a reminder, we do not support assets that require C# scripting)
  • There are many new features in Unity 2017-- far more than we can list here. The Blog Post has a link to a doc we've created that lists many of the new features available. Not everything new in Unity 2017 is available in VRChat just yet, but a lot of it is-- experiment, play around, and let us know how things work on our Canny

Changes

  • IMPORTANT: If your CPU is lower than our minimum requirements (Intel i5-4590/AMD FX 8350 or equivalent), you may experience crashes. This is because your CPU does not support the AVX instruction extensions, which are required for usage in VRChat.
  • "New" World Row is now sorted by Creation date rather than Modified date
  • "Recently Updated" World Row added, which is sorted by Last Modified (same as 2018.4.2)
  • Updated SteamVR SDK
  • Updated Oculus SDKs (LipSync, Spatializer)
  • We now support the Post Processing v2 stack. You must download the version here
  • Disabled the microphone switcher in-app until mic switching has been fixed

Fixes

  • VRC_SyncVideoPlayer and VRC_SyncVideoStream no longer have audio/video desync over time tied to CPU load
  • Users will no longer crash when viewing an avatar with a disabled Cloth object
  • Turning your view is no longer tied to framerate and should feel consistent no matter your current performance level
  • Users will now spawn directly on World Spawns rather than offset based on their position in their playspace
  • You can now un-Favorite Worlds that have been removed and show up as "???"
  • Improved app behavior on disconnect/reconnect cycle
  • Fixed user info not displaying properly when they are in an Invite+ instance
  • Fixed bug in physics update time, which was causing unnecessary jitter on objects

Known Issues

Upgrading from 5.6 to 2017.4 carried a few bugs forward for us. Our primary focus was getting Unity 2017 live and working for users. We're working on all of these issues for soon-to-come releases.

  • You cannot change your microphone device from within VRChat. Workaround: Set your Default Recording and Communication Device in Windows before launching VRChat. If you wish to change your microphone while VRChat is still running, you have to disable the "old" microphone device that you're swapping from. This will be addressed in a future patch (this is a Unity bug)
  • Toggling sitting or standing mode will rotate you based on your controller's orientation, not your head
  • Haptics are stronger than they should be
  • Putting hands in mirrors results in your hand coming back out
  • Rarely, voice gets louder then quiets back down for the next clip spoken
  • Hand gestures locked in open palm in desktop mode
  • VRC_Stations with inclined/angled transforms do not adjust camera as expected
  • If you have 50 or more avatars, your Personal avatar row may sometimes disappear (fix by closing/reopening menu)
  • VRChat sometimes freezes upon closing
  • SteamVR detects game pads as a FBT trackers and puts you into calibration mode. Work around this by checking your SteamVR before launching VRChat, and if you see an additional controller, unplug it
  • Horizontal mouse movement can hitch occasionally when moving very slowly

Website and Account

Features

  • You can now edit many of your world's properties from the website! You can change things like your world's name, your description, or your tags. We will be moving most of the world management away from the SDK and toward the website over time.
  • You can now add a YouTube trailer for your world! This trailer will be displayed in our new World Link format that we'll be updating soon.

SDK

Changes

  • Updated for Unity 2017.4.15f1

Known Issues

  • The SDK will complain about being on the incorrect version. You can safely ignore this.

VRChat 2018.2.2

Released: June 26, 2018

Client

FEATURES

  • We now support the use of the VRC_SyncVideoStream component for playing Twitch and YouTube Live streams! See the documentation on this feature here.
  • There is now a mouse sensitivity slider for Desktop users! Find it in the System menu
  • The particle limiter has been re-implemented, but it is now an optional, beta system that a user must enable. Settings for this system are tweakable per-user. You can enable the system and change these settings for yourself in a file saved in the same directory that the output logs are saved. See a guide on the recommended limits and how to set your own limits here. To reiterate, this system is not enabled by default and must be enabled by creating the configuration file.

CHANGES

  • VRChat will now display the file size of worlds on the World's icon in the top left
  • If VRChat detects that you are using an AMD card with drivers installed known to have issues with some community-created shaders, it will inform you that you need to update

FIXES

  • Many bugs fixed related to performance/error reporting
  • Even more Safety and Security fixes

KNOWN BUGS

  • SyncVideoStream audio may sometimes play to the wrong Windows Mixer channel. If this occurs, VRChat will mute the audio to avoid overly loud volume. If you have no audio, check your Windows Audio Mixer for an extra channel. You may have to restart VRChat to fix this issue.
  • SyncVideoStream has some issues playing videos in Normal mode (as in, non-live static videos). This feature is still being worked on, so we strongly suggest that you check out VRC_SyncVideoPlayer for use with static videos.

FEATURES

  • Cameras v2

    • The camera and lens now have new models! The lens is much more camera-like now, and it is easier to recognize when you are in the spotlight. The buttons now have icons, and also let you see if the camera is oriented correctly. There’s been a lot of changes, so let’s cover the whole feature set once again
    • Filters - There are now a ton of filters available for both the Photo and Stream Camera
      • Old Timey - Doesn’t look like anything to me
      • Pixelate - VRChat now for the PS1
      • Glitch - Glitch, download!
      • Code - You get used to it, I don’t even see the code
      • Sparkles - Mahou shoujo Unity-chan
      • Hypno - When I snap my fingers, you’ll atlas your textures
      • Trippy - You ever seen the back of a 20 dollar bill… on VRChat?
      • Green Screen - Since you can’t buy a big green bed sheet for VR. Useful for videos and streaming!
      • Alpha Transparent - For photoshopping yourself into the group photos. Also good for streaming!
      • Blueprint - This is just a draft
      • Drawing - VRChat Coloring Book
    • Lens Movement Space - You can now set the lens to operate in one of three “movement spaces”
      • Normal - The lens is attached to the camera
      • Player Space - The lens moves with relation to the player. Useful for a secondary view in your stream
      • World Space - The lens locks to a position in the world
    • Lens Movement Behavior - You can change how the lens behaves regarding movement and rotation
      • Normal - The lens is stationary and remains where you place it
      • Steady Cam - The lens attempts to smooth out movement
      • Look at Me - The lens is always oriented toward your head
    • Pins - You can save up to three configurations for either the Photo or Stream Camera using Pins. These configurations save Filter, Lens Movement Space, and Lens Movement Behavior. These settings save until you restart VRChat
    • Timer - Sets a five-second timer with sound feedback, then takes an image (works with either camera)
    • Extender Stick - Extends the grab range of the camera from 1 meter to 2 meters. Don’t try to grab it directly, point toward the camera!
    • Photo Camera - Pulling the trigger on your controller while holding the camera takes a picture and saves it to your Pictures directory in Windows, under a folder called VRChat
    • Stream Camera - Mirrors what is in your camera’s view to your Desktop monitor for easy stream/recording capture. Using the Green Screen or Alpha Transparency filters with recording software allows for easy “facecam” or “Picture in Picture” on your video. Pulling the trigger on your controller while holding the camera toggles between the Pin you are on, and the last Pin you were using.
  • Menu-on-top - Your menus now render on top of everything else, and the menu has priority for selection when obstructed by objects or players in the world

  • Mute Avatar Sounds - If you mute a user, the sounds on their avatar will also be muted

FIXES

  • 2018.1.1 enabled a feature to convert shaders on non-friends to Standard with Ctrl-F. This feature is not complete or ready for release, so it has been removed
  • Fixes to avatar clones so that mirrors and cameras display your avatar properly
  • Nameplates over cameras are now disabled if you have player nameplates disabled
  • Blocking and muting now work as expected
  • Voice System has had a few bugs worked out, still in progress
  • Teleporting or loading into a world will no longer preserve your previous rotation vector and will instead match the spawn location transform rotation as intended
  • Stations on avatars have been disabled. This was a planned feature released mistakenly. It will return, but the feature requires some more work and design to avoid abuse and improve user control. See Developer Update for more info
  • Buttonless Gaze option removed from System Menu
  • Performance issues related to cameras fixed
  • General performance improvements
  • General security improvements

KNOWN ISSUES

  • If you leave your Lens in World Space mode and change worlds, your Lens will still be at the same world coordinates, which may not make sense in the new world
  • If a user blocks and/or mutes a user in a room and then unblocks/unmutes them in that same room, upon moving to another room with that user they are still blocked/muted and need to be unblocked/unmuted again. In other words, don’t mute or block someone unless you actually want to block or mute them
  • Camera Extender Stick is still pretty hard to grab (point your hand towards the camera to grab more easily)
  • Buttons on the camera can be difficult to select. Hold the camera with one hand, and choose buttons with the other
