VRChat 2026.3.1 (OPEN BETA)

July 22 - Build 1878 - Open Beta

Features

Nameplate, Profile Changes

We've completely revamped two very large parts of our UI: the User Profile and the Nameplate.

So, let's talk about what's changed!

User Profile

Not that long ago, we updated the User Profile on the VRChat website. This change to the client brings it in-line with those stylistic changes. If you've seen what the website looks like, none of this should come as a surprise!

This design should make everything in the profile a lot more readable at a glance. It also opens up some extra customization options. More on that in a second...

Name Plates

The big one -- we're updating Name Plates. They look different now!

Our goal has been to try to reorganize a lot of the information that was presented by the previous nameplate, while also modernizing the design and providing additional customization options.

To that end, you'll notice the User Profile Icon is now always visible. That's because it's no longer a VRC+ feature -- now everyone can have an icon. For now, those without VRC+ will be limited to using the in-game camera to create an icon.

We expect you might have a lot of feedback! We want it! This design has room to evolve. While we've tried to think of everything we can, we know you'll likely have some great ideas.

Profile Decorations

So, speaking of additional customization...

Alongside the redesign, we're offering users the opportunity to customize their Nameplate, Icon, and Bio in a brand new way: with Profile Decorations!

These are animated! And cool. And we're giving you two sets of them if you participate in the Open Beta: Reference Cube, Teal and Purple.

To acquire said Reference Cube Decoration Sets, you'll have to pick them up from the Shop. They're free -- grab them! Only Beta users will see them, though. Also, you can equip them via your Profile!

Changes & Fixes

  • We've added "Laser User Selection" (AKA, right click selection) for PC.
    • You can enable or disable it via User Interface Settings. It's enabled by default.
    • The reticle changes when hovering on selectables before making the right click to show users what objects are selectables.
    • Along with the reticle change a hint image appears below the reticle showing that the selection activates using the right click, this hint disappears after 3 uses for each type of selectable (sticker, portals, users, items, etc).
    • Users can now press the mouse right click on selectables to highlight them, releasing right click will selecte them and open the corresponding menu.
  • You can now report bugs from within the client!
    • You can do so via the Quick Menu. Click the Report (!) button, located in the top right corner, then click "Bug Report."
    • This feature supports automatic uploading of your client log file.
  • Introducing Signed Distance Fields (SDF)!
    • Stickers and Emoji now get a gpu-side check to see if they're 'cutout' friendly. That is, only have partially transparent pixels close to edges.
    • If they are, we run our own SDF calculation that turns their alpha into infinitely scalable images that look more like vector art.
    • SDFs increase both legibility and performance!
    • These images get pixel-perfect antialiasing and clipping at any distance and from nearly any angle, even on Android!
    • Emojis have been upgraded to utilize this new tech and get a facelift, they'll no longer be super aliased from a distance, even if animated.
  • Fixed a menu soft lock bug triggered by switching to a performance-gated avatar via a pedestal in the instance.
  • Previewed Accessories in the Accessories tab of the Shop are now shown on their own rather than attached to your current avatar.
    • You might not see this change, but most users will.
  • Some camera additions!
    • Added a black and white filter to the Camera.
    • Added a "Dog Vision" option to the Color Filters settings in the Quick Menu Settings page and the Main Menu Settings Accessibility tab.
      • Bark!
    • "Apply To World" now applies the selected filter settings to the world for the Desktop Steadycam view when that option is enabled from the Camera menu in PCVR.
  • Changed uses of the word player with user for clarity in several strings.
  • Fixed some overflowing texts on QM Selection menus and localized some strings that were unlocalized in various areas.
  • Fixed an issue where the max Prop spawning distance in relation to your current avatar size was sometimes wrong in third-person view.
  • Improved position and timing of entry Warp Effects.
  • Updated styling for compact user cells across the UI.
  • Reintroduced precisely highlighting pickups that can change shape, in other words SkinnedMeshRenderer support for VRC_Pickup.
    • We reverted this one in the last release due to it affecting some content. We've now added a field to specify which meshes exactly to outline.
    • The SDK that will allow them to fix that is not shipping with this patch, however. Next release will have it!
    • We feel that the amount of content this affects is extraordinarily small, but we still wanted to note this here anyway!
  • Users with slower connections should no longer appear at world origin before moving to their correct spawn location.
  • Prop Abilities have been enabled in the client.
    • We previously mentioned this change for world creators in the last release.
    • Instance creators can now do the same thing, giving them the ability to disable certain Props from being spawned.
  • Recently Used avatars section in the wings now works properly on fresh installs.
  • Updated the design of user cells in the Friends and Groups wings.
  • World category buttons no longer have clickable/hoverable regions extending above them to steal focus from the other buttons.
  • Shiny/metallic materials now render correctly in the Avatar Accessories editor.
  • Greatly improved the reliability of VRCObjectSync, specifically around ensuring that the final state after motion is the same between all players in an instance.
    • Déjà vu? We had that one in 2026.2.3, but needed to revert it for internal reasons. This release brings it back!
  • Fixed loading screen preview inconsistencies.
  • Slightly improved instance loading speed.
  • Performance and memory optimizations.

Changes & Fixes

User Profiles

We've made several adjustments to the User Profile's layout, based on testers' feedback.

We also made several optimizations to User Profiles, including a fix to an issue that caused Profile textures to download at much higher resolution than necessary.

  • Avatar info will appear in the Profile again for users in the same instance.
  • Updated tooltip text seen when hovering the current avatar.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes prevented User Profiles from loading properly in the menu.
  • Fixed some regressions affecting status text.
  • Added a confirmation modal when unfriending a user.
  • The Boop button no longer appears when the feature has been disabled by a user.
  • Clicking your own pronouns in the User Profile will now open the edit modal.
  • Added a hover effect to the Status button on your own profile. (You can click it, by the way.)
  • Invite/Request Invite buttons no longer appear for other users when you're already in the same instance with them.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the Profile Effect icon to be tinted a random color.
  • Fixed an occasional desync between the status icon's color and the displayed status.
  • Fixed a bug that could cause saving changes to your profile to fail.
  • The mic volume slider for other users in the Quick Menu no longer resets when closed and opened again.

Nameplates

As with Profiles, we've made significant changes to the new Nameplates based on your feedback.

  • Friends' names are once again yellow on Nameplates.
    • Other UI elements in the menus will not have the yellow color returned at this time.
  • The yellow border on friends' Nameplates is now only shown in Icon-only mode.
  • Fixed an issue where the Age Verification icon would always be seen by the local user on their own nameplate, even if they set it to hidden.
  • Fixed an issue where pronouns, status, and Age Verification could fail to update on the local user's own Nameplate when changed.
  • The chatbox's arrow no longer clips through the top of the Nameplate.
  • Fixed chatbox positioning using the 3D location vs. a 2D offset, which led to clipping when viewing the Nameplate from above or below.
  • Added a "Below" chatbox position mode (in addition to "Above" and "Forward") which makes it mimic the way it worked on the old nameplates.
    • The default will remain "Above", but you can switch if you find it clipping the world in tight spaces.
  • Fixed non-latin characters not showing up in status text.
  • Switched the icon used for indicating a user's platform (Quest/Android/iOS), and made it bigger.
  • Added back the "Friend Pin" shown over Nameplates for people that are very far away.
  • Nameplates now correctly cut off very long names.
    • eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
  • Increased pronoun cut-off length.
  • Fixed group banner opacity and made them no longer ignore opacity settings when the QM is open.
  • Various minor layout, text size and alignment adjustments.
  • Fixed the color of the status icon so it matches the actual status color used in the menus.

Known Issues

  • Friends' offline duration does not appear in the menu.
  • User's profile may not update after submitting changes. Resolved when navigating away and back.
  • Adding a language and link at the same time may cause both sections to appear misaligned. Resolved when navigating away and back.

Changes & Fixes

Desktop Selection

The right-click selection feature on Desktop has been pulled from this release.

We made this change with the intent to make things a little easier for newer desktop users, who might expect certain behavior. We especially thought it might help them make their first friend!

Unfortunately, this change ended up impacting far too many worlds, so we're taking it back. We'll try something else at a later date.

User Profiles

  • A "Creator" tag will now appear for users who have uploaded content to the marketplace.
  • Separator characters are no longer affected by palette choices.
  • Fixed an issue that sometimes caused small icons to tinted the wrong color.
  • The "View All" buttons for Badges and Groups have been changed to have a smaller footprint.

  • Fixed an issue that caused the whole page to scroll when trying to scroll through a user's bio.

  • The option to show/hide Age Verification status in the Edit Profile modal no longer appears for users younger than 18.
  • Fixed a known issue where selecting "Other" when editing your own pronouns would do nothing.
  • Fixed an issue that caused the user icon to not appear on the "Change Icon Frame" button when selecting an Icon Frame in the Edit Profile modal.
  • Fixed issue that caused the "Change Profile Effect" icon to appear low quality.
  • Fixed a bug that caused an already selected language to appear when choosing languages to display on your profile.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent profile changes from being properly saved.
  • Fixed an issue that caused layout problems in the Profile after adding a link and a language at the same time.
  • Further layout adjustments, tweaks, and polish.

  • Fixed some layout issues when previewing Profile Decorations.

An Additional Note about Group Nameplates

We've heard your feedback regarding the Group Nameplate and we are working on adding an additional upload slot to the group management system for them.

We will improve our nameplate image cropping behavior to be more consistent and will include the template in this upload flow so you can be sure that your nameplate looks exactly like you'd like.

This is not in this patch, but given that it's been a major feedback item, we wanted you to know we're on it.

General Fixes

  • Fixed transparent Emoji and Stickers appearing broken.
  • Android devices will now replace rtspt:// URLs during video player loading with `rtsp://`` to work around a limitation of ExoPlayer.

  • Fixed an issue that caused the Badges panel to not display its header text.
